Home Automation

(See also: VideoMonitoring)

I'd like to be able to monitor 354 Marlborough Road, and possibly to control some things there. There are a lot of linux and arduino kinds of solutions available for this but I'm not sure how they compare to one another and I guess some research is in order.

Things to monitor & control

Monitor -

  • motion in one or two rooms
  • motion outside
  • temperature
  • water in basement
  • salt level in water softener
  • oil tank level

Control -

  • heater/temperature
  • door locks (set combination remotely?)

Available systems

This will be a list of commercial things and also a list of standards...
